Begur, the captivating town of the Costa Brava

One of the most beautiful towns on the Catalan coast

Just 50 minutes by car from Girona and an hour and a half from Barcelona is Begur, a charming town located in the Baix Empordà region (Girona) and one of the favorite destinations in Catalonia without a doubt.

The Castle of Begur

The origins of Begur Castle date back to the 11th century, when the feudal lord Arnust de Begur built it on the highest mountain, right in the centre of the town, given its strategic power. Declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, it offers excellent views over the Costa Brava.

The fortress was built on top of the rock and a large part of it has been preserved, especially the main tower, which is completely cylindrical and maintains its 5-metre height because it was built on a higher point. There are also remains of the wall, thus maintaining the structure of a historic and imposing ensemble.

The castle of Begur suffered three important damages during its eventful life. The first was during the Catalan Civil War (1468) and the second during the French invasion of 1694 under the command of the Duke of Noyer. The last was during the War of Independence against France in 1810.

On the other hand, walking from the centre, along the narrow streets leading up to the castle, you will discover pretty corners with stone houses, but also with facades painted in bright colours.

Coves and beaches of Begur

As a good coastal town on the Costa Brava, there are several beaches and coves that can be reached by winding roads.

These small isolated coves between cliffs are surrounded by low houses, most of them holiday homes, such as Sa Riera, where you can find fishing boats on the sand, and other more secluded and natural ones.

In total, there are 8 main sandy beaches that surround the old part of the town, at a distance of between 5 and 10 minutes by car:

  • Aiguablava
  • Racó beach
  • Illa Roja
  • Sa Riera
  • Aiguafreda
  • Sa Tuna
  • Platja Fonda
  • Fornells coves, set of 4 small coves

Begur's Semàfor

Located at the end of Cape Begur, on a cliff that provides one of the best views of the area, the Begur traffic light was built at the end of the 19th century. Its purpose was to serve as an orientation and reference point for maritime traffic, as well as to establish communication with ships. The Begur Semaphore was also used as a lookout's dwelling and as a warehouse.

The development of radio communications meant that buildings such as the Begur Semaphore quickly fell into disuse. Today, the building is in a very good state of conservation.

Fira dels Indians

Every first weekend in September, the Fira de Begur is held. The streets and squares of Begur host a market of products from overseas, trade fairs and musical performances. The fair begins with the official inauguration by the political authorities and people linked to the indiano world.

It commemorates the good relationship between the town of Begur and Cuba. It has its origins in the emigration of many people from Begur to the island throughout the 19th century. When they returned to the town, those who had prospered in their businesses built ostentatious houses that still adorn the streets of Begur today.

They were the popular "Americans ", who tried to recreate the lifestyle of Cuba and who left us a diverse cultural legacy.

Cami de Ronda

As in every town on the Costa Brava, we cannot fail to mention the Camino de Ronda, as one of the essential things to see and do.

It goes from Platja del Racó to Sa Riera, about 1.6 km that can be easily walked and runs along several beaches. From Aiguafreda to S'Eixugador via Sa Tuna is about 2 km. And if you still want to continue walking, from Platja Fonda to Aiguablava the path is very pleasant, and it is about 4 km.
