Interior design is a little bit like fashion: A lot is subjected to current trends, but there are a few pieces one particularly cares about and that last for decades. As we are enjoying these - let’s call them it-pieces - for a lifetime, it’s worth to invest a little more of one’s budget. In this article we present our favourite interior design classics providing some exclusivity to every property.
This fantastic design lamp was designed in 1962 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. The exceptional arc lamp was invented to avoid the necessity of installing a ceiling light in the living room in order to light it sufficiently. The company FLOS created a real piece of art that has been produced nearly unaltered for close to 60 years now. The stable pedestal is made out of Carrara marble which weighs almost sixty kilograms on its own. Across this pedestal an elegant arc of stainless steel extends, leading into a round lampshade that gives a pleasant light. The exclusive arc lamp Arco by FLOS is even exhibited as an artwork in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and will definitely be a real eye catcher in your living room, too!
It’s impossible to tell the age of this beautiful piece of furniture as well. Already in 1950 Hans Wegner designed this oak chair for the Danish company Carl Hansen & Søn. The designer was inspired by portraits of Danish traders sitting in Chinese chairs right from the times of the Ming dynasty. He combined the chair’s back support with its armrests and made one whole piece of it that resembles the letter Y and a wishbone. This characteristic “Y” provides the user with a stable and comfortable sitting position, making the chair unique. After more than 60 years, the chair is still the embodiment of modern Scandinavian design and a true classic.
Our next interior it-piece also comes from Europe’s north, Finland. This table is a design object we like best in its marble edition. Marble is not only a definite current trend, but has been vital for interior design for decades. Designed between 1955 and 1957 by Eero Saarinen, this table delivers pure minimalism to every home. The designer thought that tables with four legs were just untidy, restless and quote: ugly. He wanted a clear design for chairs and living room tables and created the tulip table as well as fitting chairs for his Pedestal collection. By now the design classic exists in all kinds of size and design as well as in the colours black, white and different marble grains for the table’s top. This is an exclusive and very elegant table that can be combined very well with the Wishbone chair by Hans Wegner.
We recommend to combine such long-lasting and indispensable furniture pieces with current trends.
