French No. 1, Caroline Garcia – wins the first Mallorca Open in Santa Ponsa
From 11 June to 21 June 2016, the first WTA Mallorca Open took place at the new Tennis Country Club in Santa Ponsa, in southwest of Mallorca. The club comprises of 11 tennis courts (six of which are grass courts) including the large grass centrecourt. All the growing of the grass courts was supervised by UK Wimbledon experts during the construction phase.
Engel &Völkers Mallorca Southwest was delighted to be able to support this brand new event on Mallorca and because one of the first official main sponsors. Over 5,000 spectators visited the WTA Mallorca Open throughout the 10 day tournament to see professional tennis in action by potential grand slam winners of the future. The semi-finals and the finals double and single matches were particularly well attended together with the Toni Nadal Trophy (for men) which attracted numerous tennis enthusiasts who came to see some previous champions including Mallorca’s own Carlos Moya.
The organisers of this event are satisfied with their efforts for the first year and proud that the WTA Mallorca Open has now earned a reputation as one of Mallorca’s premium world class sporting events. The excellent supporting programme after the matches included parties with live music offering great entertainment and creating a very special atmosphere.
Some of the best professional players in the world participated in the first edition of the WTA Mallorca Open with Garbine Muguruza (French Open champion / world No. 2); Ana Ivanovic (former no. 1;, Jelena Jankovic (former no. 1); Sabine Lisicki (former Wimbledon Finalist) and numerous well-known tennis stars together with the tournament’s ambassador; Toni Nadal (Rafael Nadal’s trainer) a respected and well-known figure on the world tennis circuit. Mallorca’s most famous tennis champion, Rafael Nadal didn’t want to miss the first Mallorca Open and stopped by to see the spectacle and cheer on the participants.
The French player, Caroline Garcia and Latvian, Anastasija Sevastova made it through to the final match and both fought under the Mediterranean sun for the title. Caroline Garcia won to become the French no.1 and is now ranked in 32nd place of the WTA rankings.
The closing event of the tournament was the Toni Nadal Trophy on the last afternoon which was well attended to see French Open champion Feliciano Lopez teamed up with Carlos Moya playing against Dominic Thiem and Philipp Kohlschreiber in a friendly match.
The participants of this year’s WTA Mallorca Open offered visitors the opportunity to watch the best of the French Open in Mallorca. The tournament was also a great practice platform for the players in preparation for late June with the Grand Slam Tournament in Championships, Wimbledon for the tennis ladies. Here in southwestMallorca WTA Mallorca Open will be a regular event for the next five years.
