The magnificent fortress got its name from a British General, Sir John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough at the time. It defended the entrance to the Port of Mahon, together with the Castle of Sant Felip and the Penjat Tower. Whether on a house hunting visit, on holiday or already at home and settled in Menorca do make a visit to the Fort, the upper level is privy to fantastic views over the historic part of the harbour. The fortress was refurbished several times until it was partially destroyed by the Spanish is 1782 and was repaired during British rule on the island between 1798 and 1802. More recently the Fort was reclaimed by the Rubió Tudurí-Andrómaco Foundation and then sold to the Consell Insular de Menorca, the Island Council of Menorca, which carried out an extensive renovation and opened Fort Marlborough as a historical military centre for the public.
Today the Marlborough Fort is a historical interpretation centre, where the military history of the port of Mahon and indeed much of Europe is brought alive to the visitor with the help of modern technology. As well as the general exhibition and the fort itself visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the time of sieges and the everyday lifestyle of the people at that era. The location of the Fort is the beautiful bay of Sant Esteve, also well worth seeing. The s-shaped bay offers magnificent views and is home to several summer houses. There are also a number of boats anchored here but the beach is ideal for those wanting to get away from the more crowded beaches.
