The German College of Madrid is the most beautiful educational center in the world. At least, the jury of the awards granted in the framework of the World Architecture Festival, one of the most important architectural appointments of the year in which the most innovative projects on the international scene are awarded.
By 2016 there were as many as eight 'Spanish' buildings nominated. Three were awarded the prize, including the school designed by the Berlin architecture studio Gruntüch Ernst.
The school began to be built in early 2013 on a plot of 34,700 m2. It has cost 56 million euros, of which 10% has been contributed by the families, and the rest by the German government. It is one of the largest educational centers in Spain and the largest civil construction in the Federal Republic of Germany abroad.
This is the sixth location of the institution in the capital since its founding in 1896. The German-speaking community of Madrid needed larger facilities. That is why Deutsche Schule, or German College of Madrid, decided to move to a larger center. He got some land in the north of the city, in the neighborhood of Montecarmelo.
There are powerful facilities housing 1,500 students and a kindergarten for 300 children. The building, built by FCC, consists of several polygons inside which are the classrooms, cafeterias, gym, concert hall with 700 seats and library.It has an underground garage and has one of the most beautiful views of the capital: the Sierra del Guadarrama, as it is located on the northern edge of the city.
The College has educated many generations of children, whose German parents have had to come to Madrid for work reasons, and has also opened its doors to Spaniards who have wanted to study with the German educational system. As indicated by the center, at the moment the percentage of Spanish children "surpasses that of the German children".
