Engel & Völkers franchise in Santa Cruz de Tenerife completes an unforgettable first year

Talking about what we were doing exactly one year ago has become a recurring theme in our daily conversations. Twelve months ago we were in full lockdown, implementing a series of exceptional measures to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. Shortly before the publication of Decree 463/2020 of 14th of March, declaring a State of Emergency, the Engel & Völkers franchise in Santa Cruz de Tenerife began its work. Contrary to what one might think, its first year has exceeded expectations.

The property office in the Canary Island city opened its doors on 6th of March 2020 amidst great expectation, as it was a step that had been long considered and which would allow the brand to expand its activity in one of the most strategic real estate markets in Spain. At that time, the franchise presented its new facilities and its team, who were a group of real estate professionals that would soon prove their worth in any scenario.

Anecdotally, the first sale, which was a beautiful duplex in La Rambla, was completed on 13th of March. The day before everything changed.

It was no secret that the real estate market in the capital of Tenerife, the second largest city in the Canary Islands, offered interesting possibilities for sellers and buyers and that the need to offer highly specialised services oriented towards the premium segment was becoming increasingly evident. It should be remembered that Santa Cruz de Tenerife, like the rest of the island, enjoys exceptional climatic conditions all year round, as well as a host of recreational activities that translate into a very attractive lifestyle, both for the national and foreign markets.

Full lockdown did not seem like the best time to develop the brand's activity, but it did not take long to discover that, in fact, we had the opportunity to prepare for the day after with more enthusiasm than ever before. In the most critical weeks for all of us, two properties in the municipality of La Laguna, a city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in recognition of its urban characteristics and its imposing historical-artistic legacy, and the other in Santa Cruz, were put on the market.

It was clear that the determination of the team of real estate consultants at Engel & Völkers Santa Cruz de Tenerife is proof against any external conditions. After the most difficult and challenging weeks, property transactions continued to be formalised with the mediation and the volume of enquiries multiplied.

Among the most outstanding sales, Diana Barriuso managed to close a deal for 1,000,000 euros without even advertising the property. She used Matching techniques (cross-referencing search criteria with data from potential buyers) to sell this property in the capital in record time. 

Months later, the same consultancy firm repeated its success with two new-build flats valued at more than 300,000 euros.

Lucca Staiger sold a large plot of land in Tegueste in less than two months and Ainhoa Recalde played a vital role in the success of the property transaction in La Laguna. Of course, one of the most media-worthy transactions was the one by Carla Alfonso, who found a buyer for the home of Canarian comedian Aarón Gómez.

Despite the uncertain international situation in terms of the pandemic, throughout 2020, 14 sale and purchase agreements and 34 property rental operations were completed by the company, most of them corresponding to high-end properties.

The first quarter of 2021 has been even more exciting than the previous year. In less than three months, a total of 6 sales and 4 lease agreements have been completed. It is true that the impact of the pandemic in the Canary Islands has been significantly less than in other regions of Spain, but there is no denying that the tenacity and determination of the team has managed to maintain normality in such challenging times.

The Tenerife property market has confirmed the potential that was expected of it, even at a difficult time, which opens up some very optimistic prospects for the coming years. Incidentally, almost a year after that first transaction, on 15th of March, Diana Barriuso closed the deal for a similar property. Everything that happened between the two sales is now part of Engel & Völkers' history. And of course all of us.
