5 fundamental moving tips

When the time comes to move home, it goes without saying that prior planning is key. If you know what you're doing, the process can be slick, streamlined, and who knows, even enjoyable. Use our moving house checklist to ensure that the big day goes as smoothly as possible.

1. Clean and decorate beforehand

General courtesy suggests that your new property should be left in spotless condition, but from time to time properties can need a little work.

Because both cleaning and decorating are by far easier in an empty home, we recommend taking care of both before moving in all of your belongings. Of course, this is much easier for buyers who aren't part of a chain. However, the previous owners may well be happy for you to arrive early for a spring clean and paint-job if the property is empty.

2. Take the opportunity to declutter

Moving home presents a valuable opportunity to sort through all your belongings and declutter. With everything packed up and in one place, it's easy to see how much you don't need. Take the opportunity while you have it, and your new home will be a cleaner, clearer, and more enjoyable place to live.

3. Pack smart before moving

Pack well and your move will be much easier. Organise your belongings by grouping similar items together. The key is to think carefully about how you'd like to unpack. It's usually a smart plan to group items by room, allowing you to pack and unpack each box without moving all over the house.

Furthermore, labelling each box clearly allows you to unload the van in the most efficient way possible. What's more, you'll find everything you need as quickly as possible when you arrive at the other end.

4. Keep aside an overnight bag

No matter how eager you are, it's unusual to be completely packed, moved, and unpacked all within a single day. There will be certain items that you can't do without, so pack these all together for a stress-free first evening in your new property. Toiletries are worth having to hand, as are some vital refreshments such as tea and coffee. Moving's a tricky business, and you'll be glad for some caffeine-aided breaks every now and then.

5. Introduce yourself to your neighbours

Moving tips aren't just about the practicalities of moving all your belongings from A to B. There's also a social aspect to consider. Introducing yourself to your new neighbours is best done as soon as possible. You might even be lucky enough to enlist a helper with the process of unloading the van.
