Teeing Off in the Valleys of Villamartin

Opened in 1972, Campo de Golf Villamartin, or the Villamartin Golf Club, is one of the most established golf courses in the Valencian community. Located in the town of Villamartin, in the municipality of Orihuela Costa, it boasts an 18-hole course that has been designed to its natural terrain and surroundings. Well maintained vegetation of over 35 years provides a beautiful nature backdrop, while the course’s location near the Mediterranean Sea allows players and guests to enjoy breathtaking views.

Designed by renowned golf course designer Paul Putman, the first nine holes are the highest and offer panoramic views of the rolling countryside and sea. The second nine holes are situated in the valley area of the course, with a few ravines providing a challenge for some of the holes. Because of its diverse terrain and topography, natural hazards, and spectacular views, the golf course has been the site of many national—and even international—tournaments, including the 1994 Mediterranean Open won by Jose Maria Olazabal.

FACILITIES

The course’s facilities and amenities contribute to an excellent golfing experience for amateurs and professionals alike. Buggies are equipped with a GPS-guided navigational system which tells one’s location on the course, as well as hole distances. There are manual and electric trolleys for rent, as well as high quality clubs. The golf course also has a spacious driving range.

A villa-style clubhouse features an open-air interior that flows onto an outdoor terrace seating. All around are lovely views of the golf course’s greenery, especially of the wooded area teeming with large trees and rich vegetation. The clubhouse has a restaurant and café offering a variety of Mediterranean and international cuisine, coffee, and drinks. Lockers and changing rooms, as well as the pro golf shop are also found here.

Campo de Golf Villamartin is one of the top recommended golf courses on the Costa Blanca. Like every establishment, Campo de Golf Villamartin has its share of pros and cons, as well as feedback from guests. One common comment shared by many of the golfers who played the course is how extremely difficult some of the holes are due to factors such as hardened sand in the bunkers, blind areas due to an overgrowth of foliage, and a rough buggy track. However, the golf course has recently undergone plenty of maintenance work, so that present and future players experience more comfortable conditions. Another feedback shared by some golfers is how the course feels ‘tight’ or too small compared to others in the area; this can be seen as both a pro and con, depending on the golfer’s preferences. Visitors can be assured, however, that the course is up to professional standards, as plenty of tournaments have been held here throughout the years.
