5 tips for the best vintage home decor

"Vintage" decoration is getting more popular every day and is increasingly used by interior designers. The idea is to find a balance between modern elements and old mid-century items, such as furniture obtained through antique dealers.

Utmost care should be taken when choosing each vintage item since the idea is not to convey an old-fashioned image. These types of furniture can be found in markets, fairs or in specialised shops. It is necessary to look for those elements that transmit personality and charisma, especially from the 50s and the 60s in order to be able to recreate that era.

The 5 keys to "vintage" style decor:

1. Restored furniture with vivid colours

These should be antique wooden furniture such as cupboards, drawers, or sideboards. After the restoration process, a coat of paint that transmits lots of positive energy using a stripping effect is added as these items are old and, therefore, they can only be varnished and painted.

2. Lamps with gold trimming

It is very important to add a touch of the gold colour to achieve that vintage feeling. Depending on the available space, these can be anything from small appliances to glass chandeliers of considerable size. Lamps can effectively transmit the sensations and memories that are sought in this type of decoration.

3. Industrial items

These are furniture that were part of old factories, schools or other trades. Some examples are the storage facilities where doctors kept all their tools and medicines, heavy iron tables, industrial lamps or wooden filing cabinets. Some of these are collector's items and are highly sought after by fans of this style.

4. The Captain

This type of quilted item with buttons so typical of sofas and armchairs is another flagship of this era. It was a very popular decoration technique and is ideal, along with lamps, to convey the "vintage" style very effectively. The sofa "Chesterfield" is one of the most requested, especially if it is old leather.

5. Scandinavian designs from 1950s

Many of these designs have become true icons that serve as unequivocal reference of this trend. All furniture, lamps and objects produced during this decade in the Nordic countries are the "vintage" pieces par excellence. The best known are wooden sideboards, white porcelain pieces or Danish armchairs. Any design of this type should have at least one of these features.
