The Maremma Park

The Maremma natural park is a protected natural area established in June 1975 and it boasts the title of first natural park established in Tuscany.

It is one of the most interesting destinations in Tuscany Maremma as it includes some of the most beautiful and untouched coastal areas of the Maremma coast.

The Park counts 9.800 hectares of land starting from the town of Principina a Mare to Talamone for about 30 km of coastline. This land covers 3 Municipalities: Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana and Orbetello including the mouth of the River Ombrone.

Ecosystems, Flora and Fauna

The Maremma Park includes a variety of ecosystems and a large number of vegetation and animal species.

This land is made of dunes, holm oak and pine forests, flood plain and lowlands. Here we also find the Uccellina Mountains, 417 meters high, with almost 3,000 hectares of hills and forests.

Numerous species of animals live here. Among the mammals we find fox, the European hare, badgers, porcupines and stone martens along with several species of smaller mammals. Wild boars, roe deers and fallow deers are also very popular. Recently, it has been discovered traces of rare wild animals such as wolfs, wild cats, and martens.

Thanks to the presence of wetlands/floodplains, numerous species of water birds nest in this area. The Maremma Park hosts over 270 bird species.

In recent years, the River Ombrone has also assumed considerable international importances for hosting wild geese and cranes after the winter season.

Some of the most frequent birds nesting in the Maremma Park are the fratino, the jay and the osprey; some nocturnal birds of prey are the tawny owl, the barn owl, the owl and the scops owl.

How to visit the park

The Maremma Park offers different routes classified by the season, the duration and the difficulty.

You can travel on foot, on horseback, by carriage, by bicycle and even by canoe. Visits can be made on your own, in groups or even with a guide.

The beauty of Maremma Park is about its nature with colors, scents and birdsongs. During the summer it is also possible to have a swim  in the sea!
