Tuscany Maremma is a land with thousands of different faces: with crystalline sea, gentle hills, mountains, but also a land with a long history, full of archaeological finds. Talking about this land, it is worth mentioning the Natural Reserve of Diaccia Botrona.
Diaccia Botrona is a protected area located in the heart of Tuscany Maremma, in the province of Grosseto. It goes from Castiglione della Pescaia to Marina di Grosseto with the River Bruna on one side and a vast pinewood on the other. This area was recognized, in the early 1970s, as a wetland of international importance. On this land there are many particular species of animals and plants, thanks to the microclimate created within the reserve.
Inside the Natural Reserve, there is the famous Ximenes Red House, one of the most representative symbols of the history of Tuscany Maremma.
It was built by Leonardo Ximenes in 1765, following the will of the Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena Grand Duke of Tuscany, as part of the decontamination of the swamp area in Maremma. In fact, the building was used to recover the swamp by regulating with locks the sea and river waters that flooded into Lake Prile.
Diaccia Botrona is, indeed, what remains of this ancient lake, almost completely decontaminated with initiatives aimed to fight the malaria illness. The current floadland is the result of natural changes combined with human actions, so its balance is therefore very delicate.
After an important refurbishment, the Ximenes Red House now hosts an interesting multimedia museum. Its path allows you to observe all the animals in the protected area thanks to the use of cameras in the surroundings.
The reserve represents a parallel world where terrestrial and aquatic animals live together in perfect balance.
