Winter is coming!

Much more than a seaside location: Tuscany Maremma will surprise you even in wintertime

If visiting Tuscany is still on your “to-do list”, winter is definitely a time to take into consideration!

Surely, the Tuscany Maremma is well-known to be a summer holiday destination thanks to its beautiful Mediterranean coast.

However, I am here to prove you wrong, as I would like to introduce you to the numerous activities you can do within the province of Grosseto during winter.

Ski, Slide, Roll

Winter lovers might have already thought of the most exciting activity to do in the cold and snowy winter: skiing. You can choose among large districts or smaller ski resorts.

The Monte Amiata is absolutely the favourite skiing destination among the Tuscany Maremma residents, thanks to its skiing tracks. Here, even those who don't like skiing can enjoy the natural winter wonderland with snowshoes or trekking.

Pamper yourself with a hot bath

Who doesn’t like a hot bath in the cold weather? During the winter, there’s no better way to spend a day (or more!) than getting pampered in a spa

Tuscany has countless natural springs (a natural flow of groundwater) but also many specialized resort towns situated around a mineral spring. There you'll find modern wellness centres, where hot spring waters are collected in swimming pools.

The most famous hot springs are in Saturnia with its free outdoor waterfalls, called Cascate del Mulino. The waterfalls are made of several natural pools of warm thermal water. Saturnia and its thermal springs are certainly a treasure of Tuscany Maremma, where wild nature and history match perfectly.

Experience the kitchen

Winter is the perfect season to warm you up in the heat of the kitchen.

If you remember eating delicious fish dishes in the hot Italian summer, you have to try the local meat dish, loved by the locals. Just to give you an idea of the flavours you can taste in Tuscany during winter: porcini & mushrooms, chestnuts, truffles, olives, wild bear and so on.

If you like Tuscan cuisine, you can also try to take a cooking class: you’ll be spoilt for choice and surprise your friends at home with your new cooking skills.

Light up winter darkness

In Tuscany, it is easy to find traditional fire festivals. These festivals have very ancient origins, they include bonfires, torchlights, and fireworks.

These celebrations usually take place after the Christmas season. The festival typically includes a torchlight or a bonfire surrounded by music and street markets offering food: sweets, mulled wine, sweet polenta and chestnuts.

Some of the most interesting fire festivals in Tuscany are:

- Le Fiaccole - Torchlight festival in Abbadia San Salvatore

- La Fiaccolata - Torchlight festival in Santa Fiora

- Fire Festival of Santa Caterina (Roccalbegna)
