Ancona is a port city with a population of 100,282 on the Adriatic coast of Italy. It was founded in 387 BC by Greek colonists from Syracuse, located in Sicily. The ancient name Ancon means elbow. This refers to the city's location on a peninsula. Due to this location, Ancona is the only city on the Adriatic where the sun rises over the sea and also sets over the sea. In Roman times, the port of Ancona was the shortest connection to the Dalmatian coast. For this reason, it was expanded during the reign of Emperor Trajan, as evidenced by a triumphal arch on the quay. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Ancona still belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire with the Exarchate of Ravenna, later it was part of the Duchy of the Pentapolis, and came under papal protection as a Maritime Republic. In 1532 Pope Clement VII incorporated the city into the Papal States, and after Napoleon's conquest, it and the surrounding area came under French rule as the Repubblica Anconitana. After several changes of rule, Ancona was integrated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. Today it is the capital of the province of Ancona and the Marche region.
The city with its monuments, churches and synagogues, streets and squares, buildings and museums as well as wonderful beaches is absolutely worth seeing and attractive. Ancona is located about 210 kilometres northeast of Rome and about 200 kilometres southeast of Bologna. The city is situated between the ridges of Monte Conero, Monte Astagno, where the city's citadel is located, and Monte Guasco, where the Cathedral of Ancona, dedicated to St. Cyriac, stands. Ancona has its own airport, ferry port, railroad station and very good highway connections. For this reason alone, this capital city offers a high quality of living and work.
