Lake Maggiore: Arona, Stresa, Verbania, XI Sportway

Lake Maggiore Marathon Sportway: Italy's most scenic route brought together 2000 participants from around 40 different countries. Here are the results of this edition and upcoming events.

There is a very special way to admire the wonders of Lake Maggiore: by running. The 11th edition of the Lake Maggiore Marathon Sportway, held on 6 November 2022 on the shores of the lake, is not by chance considered the marathon with 'the most scenic route in Italy'.

The Lago Maggiore Marathon is now a regular event for running enthusiasts, not only from Italy. For this edition, in fact, the organisation counted about 2000 participants from about 40 different countries. It was run on a splendid day in terms of weather and sports.

The Lake Maggiore Marathon was run over four different distances (42, 33, 21 and 10 kilometres), with competitive and non-competitive races. The routes started from Arona, on the southern shores of the lake, the traditional gateway to the shores of Verbano, all the way to Verbania, running along the entire lakefront via Baveno, Feriolo, and Fondotoce.

Lake Maggiore Marathon: the winners

A Scottish runner, but an adoptive of Lake Maggiore since he spends his holidays on the Verbano, is the winner of the marathon. With 2h31'10" Ruairidh Gollan won the longest part of the Lago Maggiore Marathon. Among the women, Sarah Aimee L'Epee crossed the finish line first in 3h02'14". A triathlete was the winner of the 33 km, Alessandro Degasperi, in 1h57'58". Arianna Lutteri, the reigning Italian marathon champion, won the same among women. The winners of the half marathon - whose finish line was in Stresa - were Marco Giudici and Laila Francesca Hero in their respective categories. Finally, Mario Cattaneo and Martina Tognin won the 10-kilometre section.

A weekend at Lake Maggiore

Participating at the Lake Maggiore Marathon is always an excellent opportunity to spend a relaxing weekend beyond the competition, as the great success of each edition testifies.

If the Lake Maggiore marathon is 'the most scenic route in Italy' there is a reason why. The route passed through the most picturesque villages in the area, and unique views of the lake. This shore is also home to some of the most beautiful residences and villas on Lake Maggiore. Starting with Meina, a holiday resort known for its 19th-century villas.

But one of the main stops of the Lake Maggiore Marathon was Stresa, which is located practically halfway between Arona and Verbania. Named 'the pearl of Lake Maggiore', Stresa is one of the main tourist and cultural centres of Verbano and all of northern Italy. The Borromean Islands and the Villa Pallavicino Park are among the most popular destinations for admirers from all over the world.

Next appointments for runners on Lake Maggiore

How to get to Lake Maggiore

If arriving by car is not possible or if you prefer to use transport, especially during sporting events, there are several ways to get to Lake Maggiore. The airports of Milan Malpensa and Bergamo Orio al Serio are connected by shuttles. By train, you can arrive directly at Arona station, but also at Stresa and Verbania-Pallanza. Since we are on the Piedmont shore of the lake, it is also possible to reach the start or stage points by boat from the towns on the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore.
