Many signed architectural masterpieces in Italy are designed to accompany guests in a breathtaking landscape. It is no coincidence that more and more people decide where to buy their homes following the inseparable combination of architecture and nature. For example: wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a designer building and enjoy a priceless view of Lake Maggiore?
Here's some good news: the iconic villa K2, designed and built in 1953 by the Turinese architect Carlo Mollino, the only work by the famous architect that has remained perfectly intact in the area of Agra, in the province of Varese, is for sale. Those who don't want to miss out on this opportunity can rely on Engel & Völkers, with more than 40 years of experience in the brokerage of prestigious residential and commercial properties throughout Italy.
Villa K2 is somehow reminiscent of a suspended spaceship, surrounded by vast lawns and entirely overlooking the lake. A 'spaceship' that is also the result of Mollino's lifelong love for aviation. But why is the building called Villa K2? The name was inspired by the first Italian expedition that reached the summit of K2 in 1954, the year this treasure trove of Italian architecture was inaugurated.
Casa K2 is the highest expression of a concept very much present in Carlo Mollino's works: the union of modern forms and building techniques with traditional materials in perfect harmony with nature. The house was originally called Casa Cattaneo and was named after its patron Luigi Cattaneo, who wanted it as a refuge away from the Milanese business world. Today, the house offers an authentic style, well preserved over the years. The 235-square-metre villa has six bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a large patio, terraces and a large private plot of 31 hectares. In addition, the property includes an annexe of 107 square metres, a barn of 199 square metres and six parking spaces. The building has a total commercial area of 564 square metres.
As we mentioned before, Villa K2 combines architecture and nature. The privileged location and the context in which this property is set, namely Lake Maggiore, the second largest in Italy in terms of surface area, should not be overlooked. Its shores are shared by Switzerland (Canton Ticino) and Italy (provinces of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Novara, Varese).
Born in Turin on 5th May 1905, the only son of the engineer Eugenio Mollino, Carlo was one of the most important Italian architects and designers of the 20th century. He was also an eclectic and multifaceted figure, so much so that he is remembered as an aeroplane and racing car pilot, writer, photographer and excellent skier.
Among his most famous works, it is impossible not to mention some of the most famous works of architecture in Turin, such as the Auditorium Rai Arturo Toscanini, the Chamber of Commerce building in Via San Francesco da Paola and the new Teatro Regio (rebuilt after the fire of 1936), inaugurated in 1973. Also worthy of note are the Casa del Sole in Cervinia, the arrival station of the Furggen cable car and the Slittovia del Lago Nero near Sauze d'Oulx. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his death in 1973 in his atelier.
