From 8th May to 8th September, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. you can admire a new "Panorama on the City"
In the first half of the 1300s, in the period of greatest economic power, Siena was decided to expand its cathedral. A project that would have made the Cathedral of Siena one of the largest in the whole of Christianity but which, due to a series of calamities, never saw its fulfilment. The city was in fact hit by a serious economic crisis and by the black plague, which decimated the population of the city. From 8th May to 8th September 2019 the monumental complex of the Cathedral of Siena, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, invites you to contemplate new horizons with the ascent of the only testimony of what should have become the new Cathedral: the Facciatone with its horizons and its view of the city. This huge and high wall that, in the Sienese's intent, was supposed to be the façade of a New Cathedral, an architectural dream, overlooks the whole city.
It will be possible to access every day from 10am to 7pm and, extraordinarily and by reservation, even at 8am. During the stay on the panoramic terrace, visitors will be invited to contemplate the panorama through an introduction to the City carried out by multilingual escorts.
From the top, it will be possible to recognize the most significant "places" of the City, the one originated from the "Good Government", with the invitation, once descended, to stop in the same spaces in which the Sienese community recognizes itself, and live it intensely. The Facciatone, with its mighty foundations and its slight altitudes, ridge "in the dazzling radiance of its Marbles and bricks" (Mario Luzi), is the space in which Siena welds the City of Earth and the Celestial City in a single glance. From the Facciatone the gaze is lost up to the Val d’Orcia and the Mount Amiata and, on the other side, beyond the urban brushstrokes of the city, opens the Chianti.
