In terms of gastronomy, Tuscany is the most popular region in Italy. This shows the outcome of the "Report on Italian Food and Wine Tourism", the most specific study on this subject, carried out and coordinated by Roberta Garibaldi.
The study leader emphasizes that Tuscany has developed into the most important point of reference in this industry, not only within Italy but also abroad, through years of funding and activity on the subjects of food and wine. From a culinary point of view, foreign tourists mostly list Italy as the best travel destination and, when deciding on a region, call Tuscany as their favorite destination, which has now become a real brand in connection with food and wine tourism.
The reasons for the extraordinary popularity of the region lie not only in the great wealth of local products, experiences and the wonderful landscape, but also in the fact that Tuscany is considered a pioneer and promoter of the latest trends in the food and wine sector. In addition, Tuscany is the region with the largest number of farmhouses and wineries that are open to wine tourism.
With regard to foreign tourists, a study shows that food and wine make up about 7% of overnight stays in Tuscany and are in third place as a motivation to travel immediately after art & culture and the sea. Another interesting fact is that the foreign tourist, who travels to Tuscany mainly because of the culinary specialties, is the "Top spender" and spends on average € 163.90 for daily shopping and € 47.47 per day in the restaurant.
