Christina DeutschChristina Deutsch, Managing Partner at Engel & Völkers Mallorca Central & South

How did your move to Mallorca to work for Engel & Völkers come about?

I have lived in Mallorca since 1992, having also lived in Germany for many years and having worked independently in Mallorca in the property construction/refurbishment sector and horizontal division. However, I have worked a lot less since my children were born in 1996 and 1998. In early 2002, Engel & Völkers were looking for multilingual sales advisors in the coastal town of Andratz in south-west Mallorca. My first year at the property shop in Puerto Portals was very tough going. It took me nine months until I was able to finally complete my first successful transaction.

Then followed a somewhat unique rise at Engel & Völkers for you. How did you manage that?

After three years, I took over as office manager of the licensee in Santa María del Camí. In 2006, I then started out as a sales director of a shop in Inca, both markets which are characterised by country houses and big villas – my heart was beating and this property profession was a real passion of mine. In 2010, I acquired the licences of both existing offices as well as for Llucmayor on the south coast. Today, I employ five brokers and three assistants and am very satisfied with my previous success and full of curiosity in terms of everything that is yet to come.

What differentiates the property market in Mallorca from other markets?

The answer to your question is that there is a market for second homes; here, property is an unnecessary luxury. It usually takes a little longer to broker a villa, because buyers take more time weighing up whether they want to invest in the island. You need to be patient, need to have a wide range of technical expertise and need to be a good judgment of people, in order to be successful and do not allow yourself to become disappointed if there is nothing immediately on the market for sale.

What do you need in order to be successful?

A respectable and courteous persona is essential for this profession in the service sector. Moreover, my network on the island has stood me in good stead. The name Engel & Völkers has also opened a few doors for me. Without the franchise system, I certainly would not be as successful as I am today. And, naturally, I live and breathe my job which, on a daily basis, brings me into contact with exciting people as well as dealing with spectacular dream properties!
