Golden Christmas in Venice

Thanks to the digital installations by Fabrizio Plessi and the "Natale di Luce 2020" art review

"Chiesa d'Oro" (golden Church) is the name that often indicates the Basilica of San Marco in Venice. An epithet that derives from the use of this precious material for large mosaic decorations that have fascinated pilgrims and visitors for about a millennium. The international artist Fabrizio Plessi was inspired by this "golden sky" that opens in the heart of the Basilica to give life to his work Digital Christmas.

It is a tree made up of 80 modules of one meter by fifty centimeters, which intertwine with each other to create an ideal embrace among earth, sky and sea.

Each module lights up in a different direction so as to represent, also visually, the idea of a positive contamination that is an intertwining of cultures but also meeting and comparison. An even more important message this Christmas which instead must be devoted to social distancing.

The Digital Christmas installation placed between the two columns of Piazzetta San Marco can be admired until January 6, 2021, together with a wider system of lights at the Procuratie Vecchie and Nuove and along Calle XXII Marzo up to Campo Santa Maria del Giglio provided for by Christmas of Luce 2020 initiative.

The genius of Fabrizio Plessi, however, gave Venice another magnificent work visible on the facade of the Napoleonic Wing of the Correr Museum until 6 January: The Golden Age. A real digital cascade that in a precious continuous flow spreads from the windows of the Museum and lets a single message emerge, that “Pax tibi” of evangelical memory which also bears the Lion of Venice between its paws. The Golden Age represents a tribute to the city, to its history of great prosperity and inexhaustible search for beauty, but at the same time to those who were the creators of all this, or the artisan shops that still represent a heritage of the city.

The place chosen for the location of this work is also significant, the same that in 2001 hosted Waterfire, also by Fabrizio Plessi, a digital work that instead played on the contrast between the elements of water and fire. Twenty years later the protagonist is light, in all its expressions, to create a bridge towards others and towards the future, thrown in the direction of a possible rebirth after the year of Covid.
