At the end of 2017, the city of Luxembourg had more than 110,000 inhabitants. Among them, 30% are Luxembourgers and 70% are foreigners. Most of them are Europeans from France, Portugal, Italy, Belgium and Germany. The capital of the Grand-Duchy also attracts workers from the 4 other continents: Asians, Americans, Africans and even Oceanians!
This diversity is mainly due to the attractiveness of the Luxembourg labour market. According to the American company Airinc, specialised in international mobility, Luxembourg is the 3rd most attractive city in the world in terms of employment.
To reveal this ranking, Airinc has gathered data from over 400 cities around the world. This index is based on two major factors: financial criteria (60%) and quality of life (40%). The winners are the two Swiss cities, Zurich and Geneva, closely followed by Luxembourg-City, which achieved a good financial performance: salary level, taxes, cost of living, etc. Luxembourg remains well ahead of its neighbouring capitals, which rank 29th for Brussels and 32nd for Paris.
At national level, the Grand-Duchy has twice as many jobs as active inhabitants. Hence, its constant need to attract a qualified local and international workforce.
