Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg's second largest city

Esch-sur-Alzette, the cosmopolitan city in Luxembourg’s south

Esch-sur-Alzette is Luxembourg’s second largest city, with a growing population of more than 35000 people. The cosmopolitan city in the south of Luxembourg is a mere 17km from the capital, 25km from the airport and situated at the border the Grand Duchy shares with France.

A diverse shopping offer

Esch-sur-Alzette offers Luxembourg’s longest pedestrian street, paved with numerous shops, cafés and restaurants. The Rue de l’Alzette links the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville to the Place de la Résistance, where many public events take place throughout the year, such as markets, fairs and national celebrations. Main events are the “Fréijoersshopping”, the Luxembourg Pride, the autumnal “Kulturlaf” and the Christmas market.

A cultural hotspot

The Kulturfabrik “KuFa”, a former slaughterhouse, is today an vivacious cultural centre that hosts concerts, readings, exhibitions and conferences. Many other cultural events are being held in the Conservatoire de Musique and the Esch City Theatre. The Musée National de la Résistance presents its visitors Luxembourg’s history during the Second World War and organises events, conferences and exhibitions.

Varied and spacious green areas

Esch-sur-Alzette has numerous green spaces, for instance the Gaalgebierg, a spacious park area in the heart of the city, which includes an animal park, the nature reserve Ellergronn in the southern part and Parc Laval which also contains one of the many playgrounds Esch has to offer. Next to the main train station, the Passerelle bridge links the city centre with the Gaalgebierg and the Escher Déierepark. Only a few kilometers from Esch-sur-Alzette is the beloved Parc Merveilleux, an animal park that includes many other family attractions, such as a tropical house, a mini golf, a fairy tale itinerary, playgrounds and a zoological school.
