Christmas at the table

Christmas is to say a plentiful table, around which families share and create new memories, where the flavors and scents of traditional foods of each region play a prominent role.

In the Algarve, you cannot miss the best delicacies and the most delicious traditional sweets of this season. Here it is common to start the meal on Christmas Eve with clams or cockles and, to the main dish, many families still maintain the tradition of eating roast rooster, “cabidela” rooster or “litão” (blackmouth catshark), as an alternative to cod. For Christmas Day lunch, the options usually vary from lamb, suckling pig or a delicious stuffed turkey baked in the oven.

Among the desserts, there are countless delights that are hard to resist, like the honey cake, the “azevias” of sweet potato (a kind of pastel), the cornbread, the “rabanadas” (an alternative version of French toast) and the “filhoses” (fried dough pastry). Nor can you miss the fig stars and fig cheeses, almond cakes and all sorts of dried fruits - almonds, pine nuts, hazelnuts and walnuts, along with spirited wines or the local “medronho”.
