Portugal receives more and more professionals who choose the country as their base of work, even if only for a while. If you do not have Portuguese citizenship and want to live and work in Portugal, then the DIGITAL NOMAD VISA may be an option
The digital Nomad Visa (which is officially called a residence visa for the exercise of a professional activity carried out remotely outside the national territory) is a visa specifically intended for foreign professionals who provide their services remotely, either as an employee of others or as a self-employed person. The visa allows them to reside temporarily in the country for a maximum of 1 year.
A professional who works remotely and takes advantage of this situation to live in several different locations. To work remotely, you just need a computer and good internet access, so why not travel the world like nomads and live the experience of not having a fixed address? It is very common for digital nomads to spend only a few months in each country. This way they can get to know several places at the same time they work.
It is an increasingly popular lifestyle and there are many professions in which it is possible to live as a digital nomad.
Until recently, the professionals who lived the most in this way were those who worked directly with the internet, such as programmers, content creators, designers, photographers or digital marketing professionals.
Nowadays and especially post-Covid we find professionals from almost all areas working remotely, be it psychologists, teachers, managers, civil servants among others...
In order to obtain a residence permit, candidates will have to submit documents “attesting to tax residency”, as well as proof that their average monthly income in the last three months was greater than four Portuguese minimum wages: that is, a salary of about €2,820. In the case of working remotely for a company, the rules are the same, but they may still have to present the employment contract or a statement from the employer proving the employment relationship.
In addition to these basic, identification and security documents, the individual must prove that they have means of subsistence. Depending on the type of work, different documents can be presented as proof. Accommodation conditions must also be demonstrated during the stay in Portugal and suitable for the duration of the stay (more or less temporary).
Please note that those who intend to spend less than 90 days in Portugal do not need a visa, as the tourist stay is allowed for that period. But, if you wish to stay in the country for longer, you need to apply for a Nomada Digital visa.
In addition to the creation of the digital Nomada visa, other changes were made to the legislation that regulates the entry, stay, departure and removal of foreigners from Portugal, published in Law nº 18/2022, on August 25th. Namely;
The most acclaimed change was the creation of a visa to look for a job in Portugal. It was acclaimed because it will facilitate the entry into the country for foreigners who want to find a job, since before it was necessary to get the job first and only later to be able to apply for a visa to stay in the country.
With this new type of visa, people who wish to come to Portugal looking for a job are entitled to a period of 120 days in the country, which can be renewed for another 60 days.
During this time, you must get a job, which will entitle you to obtain a residence permit to legally live in Portugal.
