We were still in June when the prestigious National Geographic decided to reveal a list of the 20 best surfing cities in the world. For NG, "a good surf town is the sum of all parts".
Thus, among the two dozen that met the conditions to be considered, such as San Clemente (USA), San Sebastian (Basque Country), Margaret River (Australia), Hossegor (France) or Waikiki (Hawaii), we also saw some unexpected options such as Tel Aviv (Israel), Hainan (China), St. Barthelemy (Caribbean), Narragansett (Rhode Island, USA) or even Lagos and the Algarve as a whole.
The explanation, as it is written in the article, is based on the fact that it is a lot of fun to look for waves in the south of Portugal, and Lagos, for example, becomes a "party town" during the summer period.
The south of Portugal is still described as attracting all kinds of surfers, from the more social ones who love to relate to other people, to drink a beer and get some surf to the mix, but above all to enjoy the lifestyle; even the purest ones who come to the place simply to surf and take full advantage of their waves.
The article also highlights the need to wake up early to escape the crowd, food, fresh fish and the village of Sagres as a place to visit.
Knowing that Portugal has other regions / cities that eventually live more Surf, like Peniche, Ericeira, the Cascais Line and Costa de Caparica, makes the choice of Lagos and the Algarve by National Geographic quite surprising.
Even so, since Portugal is a choice in an international environment and with great visibility, this is always positive and salutary.
To prove that the waves in the western Algarve are in fact the best is Joana Schenker the new bodyboard world champion ! Joana was born in Sagres where she lives and where she started to surf when she was 13. Joana is the first portuguese surfer to reach this achivement.
