The Rota da Escravatura Museum Nucleus, housed in the building known as the "Slave Market" in Lagos, received the honorary title of "International Center for Living Memory of Human Dignity" . International Observatory on Human Rights (OIDH).
"The award is part of a" global solidarity network in the sphere of global citizenship in favor of Peace "and recognizes some remarkable monuments that, in view of its history, are today a space of culture and peace, transmitting tranquility and well- being to all the human beings that visit them ", says the Camera de Lagos.
Distinguished museological equipment perpetuates the tragic memory of slavery and is located near the place where, in 1443, the first great sale of slaves of Europe took place, when the African captives were brought from Africa to Europe by the caravels.
"The ODIH is a world-wide organization based in Portugal which upholds the dignity of the human person everywhere on the planet and promotes peace in order to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable world as well as for the good common humanity ".
With the motto "Serving Humanity," the ODIH "pays particular attention to the largest and most persistent social scourges, with a special focus on extreme poverty, hunger and malnutrition, which affect millions of people around the world."
The same organization had distinguished for days the Fortress of Sagres, with similar honorific title.
