In the first weeks of November always happen a phenomenon we call S. Martinho summer.
The temperature rise and the sun shines again. Summer comes back for a few weeks and proves how special Portugal is.
We call it S. Martinho's summer thanks to the miracle he performed in the fourth century.
On a thunderous day, S. Martinho met a homeless man who asked him for alms.
However, St. Martin did more than that. He took off the cloak that protected him, cut it in half and gave half to the homeless man to protect himself from the storm.
At that moment, it stopped raining, the sky opened up, and the sun shone for days.
He was buried on 11 November, and, all over Europe, this day is celebrated with great joy.
In Portugal, the chestnut is queen. It is common to find in Portuguese streets mobile stalls where chestnuts are sold roasted, in clay roasters, and served in paper or newspaper.
In many West Coast cities, the families gather around chestnuts and other typical autumn products such as liquor, pumpkin or quince.
Visit Portugal during our S. Martinho Summer and be amazed by the country.
