Pozuelo de Alarcón is a Spanish city and municipality located in the Community of Madrid, situated to the west of the metropolitan area of the capital. It covers an area of 43.2 km², and with 84,989 inhabitants in 2016, it is the thirteenth most populous municipality in Madrid. Situated in an area of gentle undulations, with extensive natural spaces supplied by numerous streams, whose wells give the municipality its name, the origins of the current nucleus of Pozuelo de Alarcón date back to the time of the Reconquista. Since then, and until the mid-19th century, it served as the main supplier of all kinds of goods to Madrid, including those of agricultural origins and those from the tanning industry. With the sole interruption of the Civil War, during which its inhabitants were evacuated, and the territory was heavily devastated, Pozuelo de Alarcón has witnessed, over the last century and a half, a continuous influx of vacationers and affluent classes, who found tranquility and proximity to the capital in this municipality. They have been joined, since the 1960s and due to economic growth and improved transportation, by strata of all kinds - including a young population - who have transformed Pozuelo into a relevant and dynamic city within its region, becoming the municipality with the highest per capita income in the country.
