The city of Tarragona is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is characterised by its mild climate throughout the year and its ancient history. The ancient city of Tarraco, founded by the Romans and the symbol of Tarragona today, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. The city also has many monuments, such as the Cathedral, Rambla Nova, Tarragona's main commercial street, which leads to the Balcony of the Mediterranean, a viewpoint over the sea, and the port, one of the most important in Spain. Tarragona offers all kinds of services, from the Rovira i Virgili University and the Public Library to exquisite Michelin-starred restaurants a few kilometres away, through its many markets and shopping centres. Nor should we forget its traditional festivals, such as the Castells Competition and the Dixieland International Festival (jazz festival), the Easter Week of Tarragona, declared of great national interest by the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Spanish State, its International Fireworks Competition and the Santa Tecla festivities. In the surrounding area, the town of Salou is home to Port Aventura, a theme park, water park, golf course and four hotels. It is the most visited theme park in Spain. Tarragona is also 10 km from Reus Airport and 86 km from Barcelona International Airport.
