With a very characteristic 19th century-style, Salamanca district is characterized by its checker-type distribution and perpendicular avenues. The buildings´ architecture and façades are among some of the most interesting ones in the capital. Salamanca historically acted as the residential area for the politic and economic elite of the country. In the past fifty years, however, this residential character coexists with other activities including business, diplomacy, and, particularly, commercial premises. The area is one of the most important fashion hubs in the capital.
