What's on in Mallorca in August? Events recommended by Engel & Völkers

August in Mallorca means sun and fun. From traditional festivals and live music to sports and unique events, check out the best of this month. Here at Engel & Völkers, we have picked a few of our favourites. Enjoy.

From siesta to La Patrona fiesta

The legendary Moors and Christians festival takes place in Pollença on 2 August. Locals and visitors dress up in 16th-century clothing to recreate the 1550 battle that saw Mallorca’s shores invaded by enemies from the Ottoman Empire, led by Dragut, their supreme naval commander. It is reported that around 1500 men marched from Formentor, their landing place, to attack the town of Pollença, but Joan Mas led the people of Pollensa to victory. Today, La Patrona is one of the most popular festivals on the island, with processions and mock battles taking place throughout the old town, alongside much revelling.

The north of the island is home to spectacular properties, from traditional fincas to contemporary designs that complement the beauty of the region.

Summer music in Mallorca

Port Adriano Music Festival is in its 11th edition and this year, the line-up is a winning one. On 4 August, the ‘Earth Wind and Fire Experience by Al McKay’ hits the stage to perform ‘70s hits by the world-famous funk band. Then the following concerts include ‘This is Michael’, dedicated to the King of Pop; `The Gipsy Kings by Diego Baliardo’, featuring the co-founder member of the Grammy Award-winning French band famed for mixing Catalan rumba, flamenco, salsa, and pop. And for Freddie Mercury fans, ‘God Save the Queen’ is an Argentinian tribute to the iconic British rock band. This year’s music festival at the chic Philippe Starck-designed marina is not to be missed.

The Copa del Rey Regatta sets sail

The 41st edition of the Copa del Rey Regatta takes place between 29 July and 5 August at the Real Club Nautico in Palma. Some of the best sailing crews in the world will hit the Mediterranean Sea in Palma Bay to compete for the esteemed cup. With over 100 entries from 16 different countries, this year’s regatta looks to be bigger and better than ever. Eight classes will compete for the overall title: four on handicap and four in real-time. Two special prizes will also be awarded: one for the best boat overall in handicap classes and the other for the best boat overall in real-time or one design. Good luck to everyone involved!

And don’t forget that the development of Palma’s Paseo Maritimo, and the new Club de Mar, will give rise to a greener, more enticing area that is perfect for living and investment.

Night walking (from Palma to Lluc)

Saturday 5 August welcomes back the 49th edition of the island’s annual walk, or pilgrimage, to Lluc monastery in the Tramuntana mountain range that stands at an altitude of around 800 metres. Some 50,000 people from all over Mallorca take part in this overnight event known as the Marcha des Güell a Lluc a peu or ‘Güell to Lluch on foot’. Starting at 11 pm in Plaza Güell in Palma, the 48-kilometre march takes between 8 and 13 hours, a flat and uphill climb on tarmacked roads to the monastery of Lluc. If you live in Inca, you can join at 5.30 am and as the march continues, more and more people come from different municipalities. Why not take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience this year?
