Description

The ancient Fornace is located in La Morra, a municipality that combines a strong early medieval identity with its modern vocation, renowned worldwide for its wine-growing landscapes. The chimney, along with the rest of the kiln, is made of brick and mortar and is registered in the General Catalogue of Cultural Heritage as part of the industrial architecture heritage. In the lists of the Piedmont Region, it is also indicated among the settlement structures that contribute to the landscape identity: not only a memory of industrial history but also a characteristic element of the Langhe landscape. The protection of the complex, now privately owned, is entrusted solely to the Local Landscape Commission, with an express favorable opinion on the intervention. The renovation project, illustrated in photographic renderings and already ready to be carried out, has obtained all the necessary approvals and is included in the "turnkey" economic proposal. The ground floor, located in the circular tunnel, must be at least partly dedicated to a "territory museum" - public or private. An exhibition space dedicated to wines, exhibitions, artworks, and/or typical products, possibly linked to tastings or catering activities. The upper floor is classified as a "building in a tourist-accommodation area" and can therefore be used as a guesthouse in the broadest sense of the term: catering, hospitality, reception, representation, and so on. As part of urban regeneration and the enhancement of industrial heritage, the kiln of La Morra is now at the center of a prestigious recovery project, thanks to its historical and architectural value. It is not just a simple ruin, but a symbol of the ancient local industrial activity, dating back two centuries. The Regional Landscape Plan of Piedmont recognizes it as one of the significant testimonies of industrial landscape heritage.

Localisation : La Morra, Piémont

Situated atop a hill, about 500 meters above sea level and a few kilometers from Alba, La Morra is a small gem nestled in the heart of the Langhe, whose fame has crossed national borders and is now famous worldwide. Since 2014, La Morra has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the site "The Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato." The velvety hills, cobblestone streets, and irregular roofs, arranged according to the ancient medieval layout, would be enough to make La Morra a picturesque location, a guardian of timeless traditions and architectural beauties. But the citadel offers much more: the so-called "red gold." All around the hills, precious vines are cultivated, among which the most renowned is Nebbiolo, from which Barolo and Nebbiolo d'Alba are produced. Precious grapes that, cultivated with wisdom, love, and expertise, give a wine known worldwide. In every street of the village, there are typical cellars and inns where one can taste not only the famous wine but also the fine local products. Hiking enthusiasts can take on the network of 7 trails, whose paths not only bring the visitor close to the great vineyards but also allow them to discover small fractions of La Morra, votive pillars, woods, and panoramic points. Just a stone's throw from the town center, a few minutes from Alba, Verduno, Barolo, and 2 hours from Milan and Genoa, in the Langhe cycling/MTB route (GTL+ – stage 2), there is mention of a "Fornace hamlet" and the chimney is indicated as a landmark. This means that the structure is visible from the outside and is a recognizable element within the hilly routes of La Morra. In the past, the area was an important production center, an integral part of the local economy, and indeed the locality where it stands takes its name from the kiln.
