Conde Duque is a lively, bohemian and carefree neighbourhood, with an emerging, modern but vintage feel to it. Its apparent peace and quiet contrast with the hustle and bustle of Gran Vía, the recently renovated Plaza de España and Calle Princesa, which mark its southern limits. The actual name of the monumental building on Conde Duque, which imprints personality on the whole area, is that of the Real Cuartel de Guardias de Corps, an elite corps that was dedicated to the custody of the monarchs. Its construction began in 1717 by order of Philip V, the first Bourbon king, who commissioned the great Madrid architect Pedro de Ribera to design it. Of its more than 200 metres of façade, its Churrigueresque style façade, carved in stone and located in front of the Plaza de Guardias de Corps, is particularly noteworthy.
