Malasaña: The neighbourhood with the most bohemian and modern residents in the city. The Malasaña neighbourhood forms an irregular square flanked by the Gran Vía to the south, Calle Fuencarral to the east, Calle Carranza to the north and Calle San Bernardo to the west. It owes its name to Manuela Malasaña, Madrid heroine of the uprisings of 2 May 1808 against the French troops. This historical event is of great importance in the neighbourhood, as its nerve centre, the Plaza del Dos de Mayo, is located on the site of the old Monteleón Artillery Park, where an uprising took place under the command of Luís Daoíz and Pedro Velarde. An arch from the old barracks and the monument in honour of these two captains are preserved in the current square. Malasaña is also closely linked to the Movida, the cultural and social revolution that emerged in Madrid during the 1980s and which had its epicentre in this neighbourhood of Madrid.
