Is my electrical installation compatible with a vehicle charging station?

The transition to an electric car is accompanied by many questions, starting with the means of charging. You should, therefore, ask yourself if it is necessary to install a charging station in your home or if there are other alternatives to consider.

There are three types of EV charging:

  • Slow
  • Fast
  • Rapid

To know which one best suits the characteristics of your vehicle as well as your expectations, you must first identify your needs. Note, moreover, that when choosing, it is essential to know the properties of your electrical installation. Circuits and electrical equipment do not necessarily have sufficient capacity to support the demands of a charging station.

Have all the useful information before making your choice

Finding the charging station you need goes through exhaustive knowledge of a certain number of technical elements:

Installation constraints:

  • Compatibility with the existing network;
  • The distinctive features of your vehicle;
  • The strength of the power supply;

The standard charging station

You should note that the conventional recharge is 7.5 kW. This index corresponds to a so-called conventional connection, whether it is a single-phase or three-phase current. This type of recharging is conducive to the largest number of electrically operated vehicles. Four hours may be more than enough to refuel, although some models will require up to 20 hours of charging. This alternative does not involve any effort to adapt the terminal to the installation you have. Easy to set up and efficient, it is the solution that offers the best value for money.

The fast charging station

With this type of terminal, you will need a particular electrical circuit, in the knowledge that the power obtained is significantly higher. To install, you must have a connection to a two-phase 400 V network composed of a zero sequence generator also called "neutral point."

The rapid charging station

To obtain such high power, you will need to strengthen your electrical installation.

As the majority of Belgian districts, especially in Brussels, have a three-phase 230 V connection, the prior installation of a transformer to switch to 400 V is necessary, unless your supplier is able to immediately supply you with the 400 V required! Besides, each modification involves a cost so ensure you are fully informed while keeping in mind that a standard or slow terminal is, in most cases, sufficient.

Conclusion

You will be required to pay costs of transformations carried out on the electrical circuit of your home. It is, therefore, better to do your research before choosing your charging station. Contact your car dealer or electricity supplier for more information.
