Czechs spend an average of CZK 17,000 per year on furniture. In addition to purchasing large chain-brand products, they are also increasingly attracted to and invest in original pieces from smaller design studios, including Czech ones. And it is no wonder: Czech designer furniture is being successfully sold even abroad. Take a look at some of the brand furniture that can render any living space more stylish.
Czech furniture production of has been growing steadily for the last 7 years. According to the estimates of the Czech Furniture Association and the market-research firm Apicon Consulting, sales this year alone will exceed 44.8 billion CZK. More than half of Czech design furniture produced each year has ended up abroad. The largest domestic exporters include TON, Furniture Jinak and Jelinek. In short, Czech designer furniture clearly has a lot to offer, and it could be a great shame to neglect to check it out when setting up your own interior. Which brands, for example, can you order a couple of chic design pieces from?
Initially, this designer studio focused on renovating original Czechoslovakia pieces, but by now have graduated to directly producing period furniture. Adam Karasek and Jiří Mrázek, who are behind the Nanovo designer brand, draw inspiration primarily from the second half of the 20th century; thus breathing new life into original vintage designs. Their pilot project was based on a 60-year-old Brussels-style chest of drawers, for which they complemented by their own design of matching cabinets, lamps, desks and accessories. If you have a weakness for Czechoslovak design, their pieces are sure to bring a nostalgic smile to your face.
The TON brand is a househould name in the Czech Republic: it has been producing sought-after bent-wood furniture since 1861. The brand-name’s reputation soon extended beyond the border of its hometown of Bystřice pod Hostýnem, and today still collects prizes on an almost regular basis both in the Czech Republic and on foreign markets. For example, the Alba collection by designer Alexander Gufler, was the winner of the 1918 Reddot Furniture Award as well as the 1918 The German Design Award; and Furniture of the Year competition award, and the Chips Chair created by Lucie Koldova won the Best Collection of Furniture Award at this year’s Designblok.
There are also many Czech companies creating inspired furniture pieces to beautify your gardens and terraces. One brand bringing the best of Czech designer furniture to your outdoor spaces is Egoé. The studio produces its minimalist collection in cooperation with leading Czech designers in the town of Bílovice in Moravia. Their creations enrich not only the exteriors of private residences, they grace public spaces as well. The company works mostly in its signature material, wood, to create elegant outdoor seating, lighting, grills, and other products.
Lugi furniture is produced in the town of Libčice nad Vltavou, and specializes in fragrant wood furniture and imaginative accessories inspired by Nordic design. Their hardwood products can be found in Czech households as well as well as in shops abroad, and have been featured in international trade-fairs in locations such as Milan, Paris, Copenhagen and London. In 2018, Lugi’s Marani collection was awarded the Furniture of the Year Award by the Association of Czech Furniture Makers.
If you are planning to purchase a new couch, armchair or seating set, let yourself be inspired by Böhm’s retro and modern designs. The company from Jihlava specializes in the production of upholstered furniture, and besides beautifying personal homes, its design pieces also grace the interiors of hotels, spas and restaurants. In 2018, the company’s Phoenix armchair won both an iF Design Award and a BIG SEE Product Design Award. In years past, Böhm’s has also won the prestigious Mobitex Grand Prix award: its Phoenix armchair won this honour in 2016), and its Maranello couch did so in 2017.
