The Nit de l’Art is the most prestigious contemporary art event on Mallorca’s cultural calendar and 2021 marks the event’s 25th anniversary. This year, from Thursday 16 - Saturday 18 September, galleries, museums and historic buildings across Palma de Mallorca will open their doors to the public who can enjoy a diverse range of exhibitions from around 60 local and international artists completely free of charge.
With painting, photography and sculpture exhibitions alongside installations and other activities, the Nit de l’Art unites the city, bringing the atmospheric Old Town to life as locals, residents, bright young people and gallerists gather in the labyrinthine streets over a glass of cava. For the 25th edition, participating galleries include Art Palma Contemporani, Es Baluard Museu, the Fundació Miró Mallorca, the Centre de Cultura Sa Nostra, Caixa Forum Palma, Can Balaguer, Casal Solleric and Baró a Palma, and CCA Andratx and the Galeria Maior in Pollença.
This year, galleries and venues place artists from the Balearic Islands in the spotlight. Individual exhibitions will include Pep Girbent and Carles Congost at Horrach Moyà, Bernardí Roig and Marcelo Viquez at Kewenig, and Luis Gordillo at the Galeria Maior. International artists include José Dávila from Mexico and Alicja Kwade from Poland and Gregor Hildebrandt and Germany, whose exhibition will be displayed at Galeria Pelaires. Female artists are prioritised: Mallorcan artists Bel Fullana, at the Fran Reus Gallery, and Marta Pujades at Xavier Fiol. Other artists include Canadian Beth Letain's exhibition at L21, Laura Marte at Casal Solleric, Elena del Rivero, and Lara Fluxà at Es Baluard Museu.
Bars, cafés and shops also join in the revelry; past years have enjoyed live music and performance art. The Nit de l’Art is a celebration of expression in the historic heart of the city, just one of the many reasons to love Palma de Mallorca and its unique cultural fabric. Founded in 1997 by gallerists Pep Pinya and Xavier Fiol, the Nit de l'Art was established to make Palma one of Europe’s main artistic hubs. The fact that the event is celebrating its quarter of a century anniversary is a testament to its success.
