Cultural day out in north Mallorca

Set at the end of a quiet track, near the secluded beach at Es Coll Baix - a coveted destination for trekking and sailing – is the Museo de Sa Bassa Blanca. Considered something of a hidden cultural treasure of Mallorca’s north, this year it’s celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special programme of “puertas abiertas” including readings, poetry recitals, conferences, theatrical performances, and workshops.

Established in 1993, the museum is a fantastic place to visit for villa and apartment owners based in Alcúdia, Puerto Alcúdia or nearby Pollensa. After a morning exploring the beaches near the luxury estates in Bonaire, or the sailing from the marina at Puerto Cocodrillo, a few hours exploring the galleries and gardens of this delightful museum will amuse adults and children alike.

Visit Alcúdia’s hidden cultural hotspot

Part gallery space, part sculpture park, part landscaped garden, the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca boasts an eclectic collection of old and new unlike anything else on to be found on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca. The foundation is particularly known for its collection of portraits of children by Old Masters from the 16th to early 19th century. The main house is also of architectural interest: it was designed by the Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy in 1978, and is now a listed building.

The museum, also known as the Fundación Yannick y Ben Jakober, was established by two artists: Austrian-born Ben, who was educated in the UK, and his French-born, British-naturalised wife, Jannick. Both Yannick and Ben have lived in Mallorca since the 1960s and have exhibited works at the Venice Biennale.
