Sailing and water sports on Mallorca’s north coast

Arguably some of Mallorca’s best sailing and watersports spots are found along Mallorca’s north coast from Cala San Vicente to Cala Figuera on Formentor to the calm waters of the bays of Pollensa and Alcudia–there’s something for everyone.

Sailing along Mallorca’s northern shoreline is something that residents, locals and tourists enjoy year-round and while the months between November to February can be a bit unpredictable weather-wise, in recent years, the period between Christmas and New Year has made for perfect sailing.

While the bays of Pollensa and Alcudia buzz with activity throughout the summer, many agree that one of the best times to enjoy the sea is October after most of the summer tourists have gone, but the water temperature is still warm enough to swim in.

Sailing trips

Many of the marinas in Puerto Pollensa and Puerto Alcudia offer boat chartering services with, or without crews. Day trips make restaurants such as Es Vergeret, which set in a glorious old finca in Cala Tuent with astonishing views, more easily accessible (it avoids the 50-minute car journey from Pollensa along hair-pin bends). From here, it’s just 20 nautical miles from Menorca—another advantage to living in the north of the island.

Learn to sail

Some of the best sailing and windsurfing conditions in the Mediterranean are found around the island but the sheltered bay of Pollensa is considered among the best places to learn and improve techniques. The safe and protected waters are good for beginners while those needing more challenges and excitement can head further out for stronger winds and waves. Long-established Sail & Surf Pollensa offer lessons to all levels.

SCUBA diving

There are two dive shops in Puerto Pollensa. British-owned Scuba Mallorca (+34 971 86 80 87) offers the full range of diving services from try-a-dive to dive boattrips and charters catering to groups of all sizes. The school is open from March through to October although they offer special off-season boat charter bookings from November through to February. Instructors speak English, German, Spanish and French. Pro Dive Mallorca (+34 97186 79 78 ) again offers trips to dive sites suitable for newly qualified divers as well as those with more experience, with instructors speaking most of the main European languages.

Kite-surfing & paddle

One of the best kite-surfing areas in the north lies at the eastern end of the Bay of Alcudia. Son Serra de Marina is a 450-long beach which backs on to natural sand dunes and countryside.

For kite-surfing lessons or equipment rental as well as paddle-boarding lessons or tours, try Mallorca Kiteboarding in Puerto Pollensa.

Marinas

The Real Club Nautic Port de Pollenca caters for all types of boats up to 25m and has a clubhouse with a restaurant and cafe, as well as a swimming pool, sailing school and sports fitness club. Alcudiamar is another large and well-equipped marina with 744 moorings. The others, Marina de Bonaire in Mal Pas, on the northern side of the Alcudia peninsula and Puerto Deportivo Ca’n Picafort is a small yacht harbour to the south of Alcudia.
