Why Rafa Nadal—and property buyers–fall in love with Pollensa

Buyers in search of properties for sale in Pollensa are attracted by the fact that the market town stays lively throughout the year. Last month, the world’s press turned the spotlight on the area as the Mallorcan tennis star, Rafael Nadal, celebrated his marriage to his long-term girlfriend. The couple took their vows in La Fortaleza, one of Pollensa’s most spectacular settings overlooking the Bay of Pollensa. A reported 350 guests, which included King Juan Carlos I, were invited to the ceremony.
La Fortaleza is a 17th century fort which was made famous during its starring role in the BBC thriller The Night Manager. Regularly cited as one of Spain’s most expensive properties, it was bought by Lord Lupton, a British banker, in 2011. It boasts two pools, seven villas and a series of spectacular terraces overlooking the sea. Earlier in the summer, La Fortaleza also hosted the wedding of premiership footballer Gareth Bale.

The allure of Pollensa: a perfect base for a holiday home

Widely acknowledged to be one of Mallorca’s most attractive market towns, Pollensa boasts a warren of narrow streets, attractive stone-built town houses and a large open square lined with cafes and restaurants.

Having been “discovered” throughout the 20th century by a series of artists from Spain and further afield, the town has a strong artistic community. But another attraction is the weekly Sunday market—one of Mallorca’s best—which is held throughout the year.

Pollensa offers the holiday home buyer the best of both worlds. It has plenty of local charm, including specialists in home-made ice cream and bakeries such as C’an Xim where you can buy some of the best ensaimadas and cocas on the island. Alongside this, there is a selection of excellent restaurants—some of which are open all year round— and world-class hotels such as Son Brull with its spectacular spa.

Those of a sporting nature are spoilt for choice when buying a property in Pollensa. Golf fanatics can play on Pollensa Golf, a 9-hole course with spectacular views over the coastline, cycling and hiking in the Tramuntana mountains, birdwatching in S’Albufera, and exploring the local art galleries.
