Various historic locations make the north of Mallorca a well loved destination and a sought after location for buying a villa or finca. The best known include Alcúdia and Pollensa. Majorca's oldest city, Alcúdia, is over 2,000 years old. In addition to archaeological finds from the Roman era, visitors can admire the medieval city walls and gates and follow the traces of history throughout the old town. In summer, theater performances and open-air concerts take place here, ranging from medieval music to jazz.
A little further inland is the smaller town of Pollensa. Like other places on the island, Pollensa is shaped by several cultures. The founding of the first settlements can be traced back to the Arabs, who introduced a modern irrigation system. Add to that the Romans, the vandals and the Knights Templar, who were presented with Pollensa by the then King Jaume I. The town remains prosperous and this is evident in the elegant villas, grand manor houses and spectacular town palaces of noble families dating as far back as the 17th and 18th centuries. A visit to the former Monti-Sión monastery is also a must and will be a favourite walk once you have made your new home in the town. Climb the 365 steps of the El Calvari and you will reach the 18th century monastery (chapel) and can take in the scandalous views over the entire municipality.
