Celebrate with the locals and experience the traditions of your new home in Spain

These traditional/ religious festivals are very important to the Majorcan community and are celebrated mostly over several days. Real estate agent Engel & Völkers point out that new homeowners should get involved in the various fiestas not only will they have a great time, they will also learn a bit more about life in Mallorca. Amongst the loveliest fiestas is the Mare de Déu del Carme on the 16th of July and celebrated in most coastal towns, including Puerto Pollensa, where the highlight is the procession of local boats that are colourfully decorated, around the beautiful bay of Pollensa and accompanied by the village band. These festivities continue on through a week filled with concerts, attractions, dancing, etc. and ending with a fantastic firework display at the beach.

The festival of Sant Jaume in Alcudia is also filled with concerts, folk dancing, street performances, water sport activities and open-air dinners, etc. The programme also includes a Roman Festival, in tribute to Alcudia’s Roman roots. A must do after buying a villa or house in the north, is the incredible week long ‘La Patrona’ festival in Pollensa, if you want to have a very special experience and delve even deeper into the island's traditions. It is one of the best-known festivals on the Balearic Island and is celebrated on 2 August, the saint’s day of the Mare de Deu dels Angels. The highlight of this festival is a massive mock battle between the Moors and the Christians, which is performed along a set route on the streets of the town and ending in a grand battle on the outskirts near La Font (not for little children!). Fire risk permitting these festivities end with a brilliant firework display. Again, the week leading up to the finale is filled with traditional dancing, concerts, exhibitions, craft markets, street performers and other outdoor events.

For lovers of classical music, Engel & Völkers real estate agents highly recommend the distinguished International Classical Music Festival of Pollensa, held throughout August in the beautiful cloisters of Santo Domingo. Enjoy 7 concerts of international standing that include exceptional orchestras, soloists, choirs and opera singers. On the penultimate day of the festival, for example, the National Orchestra of Spain, conducted by David Afkham, will perform. Be inspired on all levels and discover a whole new quality of life – buying property in this wonderful corner of the island is a good move.
