Are you interested in Mallorca's traditions? Then there is no better way of getting to know the character and identity of the local residents than going to a one of their fairs. Engel & Völkers Mallorca North recommend you check out one of the fabulous, traditional artisan and agricultural fairs, the first in autumn is in Alcudia, the Fira d'Alcúdia held on the first weekend of October. If you miss Alcudia or want to repeat you can visit one of the others; at the beginning of October Escorca’s fair is held at the monastery of Lluc, this fair celebrates the Serra de Tramuntana. Then on the 4th Sunday after Sant Lucas (18th October) Pollensa is the venue and on the second Sunday in November the old town of Muro comes at the annual fair. These events are very popular, everyone will find something they love amongst the exhibitions, live music, fairground attractions, workshops, street food and handicraft market stalls, etc.
At the Alcudia Fair during the first week of October you will find a brilliant mix of regional agricultural products, handicrafts, artisans, animals and gastronomic products, etc. The event has a lively programme and is hugely popular because it is one of the first autumn fairs accompanied by the Caparots, a peculiar tradition, probably with pagan roots, represented by symbolic personalities with huge heads that are said to protect the village or town.
Learn a little more about the Caparrots in our blog with real estate agent Engel & Völkers Mallorca North and let us show you two interesting properties within the properties from our area.
If you are thinking of buying a property in the north of Mallorca, a visit to the Fira d'Alcúdia will give you a very good insight into island life and the Majorcan people. At this traditional artisan fair, you will find stalls with a wide variety of products as well as a varied programme with plenty going on for children and adults, such as, exhibitions, medieval horse shows, dog races fairground rides and the Caparrots. Figures with large, imaginatively designed masks made of papier-mâché or plastic, that represent various personalities and figures from popular folklore. A group made consisting of different Caparrots is called S'Estol del Rei en Jaume, the name deriving from Spain's most important historical figure, King Jaume I, who is also represented as a Caparrot. Each of the Caparrots embodies a character from Mallorcan history, tradition or literature and is distinguished by certain characteristics, which they present at the Fira d'Alcúdia parade. One of the characters portrayed is Ramón Llull, who was a great writer, philosopher and theologian. Mythical creatures that appear in traditional folk tales, such as the fairy Sa Jaia Tonina, who distributes sweets to the children during the parade, are also part of the S'Estol del Rei en Jaume. L'Amo de so na Moixa - a crazy miller in Mallorcan tradition - throws flour into the air, creating a hilarious atmosphere. Other caparrots include Gori Dolenties, who visitors recognise by his donkey ears, and Tofol Mentider, who wears a large horn on his forehead. This is a funny and fascinating spectacle not to be missed!
