Mallorca at your feet - Which path are you going to take – buy a house, start walking and fall in love

If you do buy a property and move your world to the beautiful north of Mallorca, begin the journey of a lifetime and feed your soul with the incredible nature and stunning scenery. As you can imagine the mountains alone provide endless, unforgettable trails. Start with a relatively short loop trail (5 km - 2 hours – moderate difficulty)  - Es Pujadors -  Coll de na Benet -Bon Aire, a unforgettable hiking route near Alcudia offering spectacular mountain and sea views at the same time, early morning or evenings are the best walking times, note the path is uneven in some parts and there is a little rock climbing. Also in Alcudia is a longer loop trail (9.7 km – 4 hours – difficult) - Ermita de la Victoria - Penya des Migdia - Talaia d'Alcúdia, you can again expect magnificent and well-earned views! Another popular hike is from Alcudia or somewhere nearer along the trail to the La Victoria Hermitage, the path is smooth and the return is downhill. If you try this hike keep your eye out for the little islet of S’Illot (about 2 km in the direction of La Victòria from the sporting marina in Bonaire), in summer the S’Illot restaurant, once a hippy beach bar, today definitely posher, is a great place to dine and watch the sun go down on a summer evening.  Enjoy incredible views over the bay to Formentor and Puerto Pollensa. Get out there you will be amazed. Do remember to take some water especially if the sun is out!!!

The out and back route from La Victoria to Peña des Migdia is a shorter walk (4 km – under 2 hours – moderate), great for a Sunday walk with the family at any time of year. If you want to take the difficulty up a notch, the climb to the summit of the Peña des Migdia is a little more demanding but still well suited to beginners. Views from the summit, which include the Formentor peninsula, the beach of Coll Baix and both the bays of Alcudia and Pollensa are simply breath-taking. If you get a clear day you might even see the outline of Menorca.

An easy excursion is the Puig de Sant Martí, a 266 m hill in Alcudia (5 km – 1 hour 30 minutes -easy), also great for kids. The starting point of the walk is from the car park at the bottom of the hill that you will find off the main road arriving in Alcudia from Palma on the Ma-13 between the 1st two roundabouts, keep your eye out it is just a small road. The first 1.5 km is fairly flat before the climb uphill begins, at the top you will be rewarded by grand views of the bays of Alcudia and Pollensa. Another great hike for the more serious is from Alcanada to Coll Baix, which is around 13 km, it’s a moderate trail but you do you need to be fit and it is better to do it in the autumn or winter.  An easy walk is the S'Albufera Nature Park covering 1974 hectares of land including wetlands, bays and pine forests.

There is always a new route to be discovered with family and friends, beautiful landscapes to  contemplate and challenges to plan. Mallorca is a walkers dream, begin the trail and make the island your home. Must visits include the Santuari de Lluc and other various monasteries, maybe take part in something really special, such as,  Lluc a Peu (Lluc on foot) organised annually by the Grup Güell. This summer walk began with 30 people in 1974, who wanted to give their thanks to the Virgin of Lluc and patron of Mallorca at the monastery following an accident in which a lttle girl was fortunately uninjured. Today the walk is held on the first Saturday in August and begins at 23.00 hours from km 0, which is the Plaça Güell in Palma, prior inscription is needed and the rules adhered to for your own safety. Thousands of people complete the walk every year, the route Palma-Marratxi-Santa Maria-Consell-Binissalem-Lloseta-Selva-Caimari-Escorca Lluc (around 10+ hrs – 42 km – moderate). Transport, services and refreshment are provided. It is also good to know that many of the hermitages and monasteries have a café and rent out rooms for those that want the adventure to continue.
