Majorcan mud – ceramics art and tradition

Mallorca boasts of rich and long tradition of crafts.

We find beautiful products of all kinds such as ceramics, glass, materials, shoes, jewellery, leather goods and pearls for sale in many local markets, craft shops and even large supermarkets. But often they can also be purchased directly from the manufacturer, which is usually a small family company.

In some areas nearby Palma: Portol, Sa Cabaneta and Marratxi, exists a centuries-old tradition of manufacturing ceramic pieces. Dating back to the 18th century, the Majorcan families of craftsmen began to produce pottery, crockery, vessels using the mud (in Majorcan "fang").

Thanks to the dedication of many generations this profession with its rich techniques was passed on from parents to offspring and lasted for over three centuries.

Nowadays, the manufacturers use the inherited knowledge about the mud and also introduce new tendencies and materials creating thus unique and selected pieces like original pots, jugs, various decorative details, kitchen dishes, crockery or toys.

The most popular piece made of mud is "sa graixonera", a pot in which many traditional Majorcan dishes are served, such as “sopes mallorquines”, “tombet”, cod orother fish, “frito mallorquin”.

Another well-known element made of mud is "es siurell", a typical souvenir of Majorca. This figure which imitates people and horses, is painted in white, red and green and has a whistle attached.

A unique opportunity to see the mud work of craftsmen and buy their original pieces is the Pottery Fair in Marratxí (Fira de Fang) which will be celebrated this year between 4th and 12 of March.

At the fair onlyauthentic craftsmen of ceramics can exhibit their work.

The extensive programme of activities for the whole family includes different craft workshops where you can touch and manipulate the “fang” and decorate the pottery.  Also the Museum of Mud in Marratxi invites to see its attractive collections and find out more about the history of this ceramics art.
