Easter on Mallorca

After the almond blossom in January and February ushered spring in Mallorca, everything is greening and blooming before Easter. For walks on the mostly lonely beaches, the time around Easter is perfect, the island is not so crowded and you will find peace and relaxation everywhere with mostly beautiful spring-like temperatures and a bright blue sky.

Easter is the most important religious festival of Mallorca. This gives visitors the opportunity to attend numerous religious shows and processions during the Easter holidays. Anyone who is enthusiastic about Christian customs should not miss the festive events, they are totally worth seeing. Holy Week is traditionally full of rituals and processions in Mallorca to commemorate the suffering of Christ.

The Easter week, the "Semana Santa", traditionally begins on the Sunday before Easter, Palm Sunday. A visit to the festive service in the beautiful Cathedral of Palma should not be missed. After the blessing of palm and olive branches, the faithful walk the streets follows.

Maundy Thursday in Palma: Mallorca's largest procession

On Maundy Thursday, Palma will be the scene of a magnificent tragedy. At noon, the first visits secure the best seats on the spectator stands. In the late afternoon the largest and most important Easter procession in Mallorca, the "Processó del Sant Crist de la Sang"will begin. All brotherhoods of the island take part in it. On Good Friday in several cities in Mallorca, the Deposition Processions, the so-called Devallements, take place.

On Easter Sunday, splendid services will take place all over the island, which are well worth a visit. On Easter Monday, the Mallorcans like to spend a picnic in the open countryside. The families enjoy the warm days in a beautiful spot in the nature and taste the delicious food. On the other hand, families meet in restaurants and enjoy a good meal. Easter Saturday is good-known for the traditional "Panades", half-round, baked in fat and spicy stuffed meat or fish shortbread pockets. They are usually served with vegetables with raisins and pine nuts. The sweet variant is "Robiols" with a filling of quark or jam. Also elaborately decorated colorful chocolate eggs, called in Spain "Mona de Pascua", are an essential part of the celebrations. Besides that, the children get gifted by their godparents.

As we all know, Pascua is Easter in Spanish. So surely, ‘felices Pascuas’ means ‘happy Easter’, right? It actually means Merry Christmas. So it's not necessary to congratulate to Eastern here. Nevertheless, the Semana Santa is a unique way to experience the Mallorcan way of life from a fascinating side. In this sense, Happy Easter!
