The second French Riviera Festival des Jardins (Garden Festival)

From March 30 to April 28, 2019, the city of Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes department will celebrate spring during the second edition of the French Riviera’s Festival des Jardins. This will be another opportunity for residents and visitors of the region to discover beautiful gardens and exceptional landscaping, whether permanent or ephemeral.

The first Festival des Jardins was a great success

In spring 2017, the first Festival des Jardins lasted one month attracted more than 450,000 visitors. This huge popular success went beyond all expectations and predictions and convinced the organisers to repeat the experience two years later. At the time, the Festival entitled "The Awakening of the Senses", was present in all main cities of French Riviera. Ephemeral gardens were created for the event in Nice, Cannes, Grasse, Menton and Antibes Juan-les-Pins. More than 200 events were organised, including a life-size treasure hunt.

Most of the cities and towns of the Alpes Maritimes department participated in 'The Awakening of the Senses', as well as the Principality of Monaco and even in Italy! In 2017, the special guest of the Festival, Julie Depardieu, was fully involved to make the media aware of the event. The jury awarded the prize to the Secret Gardens of Menton, set up by the Les Olivettes group.

Highlighting the diversity of gardens on the French Riviera

For this new edition, the organisers of the Festival des Jardins have decided to bring together the Riviera Residents under the theme 'Dreams of the Mediterranean'. The exceptional gardens invite us to a total immersion into the immense plant heritage of the region and, by extension, the Mediterranean rim. It includes Provençal gardens, of course, but also landscapes imbued with the spirit of the Renaissance or Ancient Greece. Some oases of greenery will inevitably evoke the lost paradises of the Maghreb.

The 2019 Festival des Jardins invites visitors to go on a real journey around the Mediterranean sea. This inland sea was the centre of the world and the nerve centre of our civilizations for many centuries. the Mediterranean Sea left us a unique and refined cultural heritage that we should take care of. By celebrating its plant diversity, the Festival des Jardins aims to become part of this process. During one month, the residents and tourists who visits the region at that time will have the opportunity to discover this diversity.

At Cannes, you can explore Flying garden, Les fenêtres de Matisse, Funduq, and Ode aux femmes d'Orient

On the hills of Grasse, you can walk in the creations Au fil des flots, L’impression des songes and Pourtour végétal de Méditerranée

By Menton, discover  Graines Voyageuses, En Immersion, Terra Media-Aqua and Le jardin archipel where you will find truly inspirational herbaceous borders.

Finally, in Nice, you have the opportunity to admire Au-dessus des immortelles, P38 Le Petit Prince and Résilience d'été.

All these names, both mysterious and poetic, are invitations to travel for everybody, from the simple onlooker to the nature lover. They were all designed specifically for the event.

Several animations for children and adults

The Festival des Jardins is not just only about the competition. Outside of that, several ephemeral and majestic gardens were created along the coastline, in the major cities of the Alpes-Maritimes and in the Principality of Monaco. Moreover, more than 350 animations will be organised during the month to entertain and educate children and adults.

Itineraries have been drawn to discover the creations of the Festival in a funny way. Several conferences will take place on the themes of gardens and sustainable development in the Mediterranean. Finally, a treasure hunt entitled 'L'Herbier Magique' will be held to give everyone a chance to find all the most iconic plants in the region.
