The 6 museums to visit within the Argentario area

During your holidays in Tuscany Maremma, don’t miss the opportunity to learn more about the history of the Silver Coast

During your holiday within the Argentario area you will enjoy relaxation on the beach, boat trips, outdoor sports and panoramic walks.

However, between one bath and another we recommend you dedicate time to some cultural activities. In fact, the Silver Coast (Costa d’Argento) offers 6 small but interesting museums. Sea and archaeology are the main topics. Let's see together which are the exhibitions you can’t miss.

Mediterranean Aquarium of the Silver Coast

Here, Marine flora and fauna meet underwater archaeology. The aquarium has 17 tanks, 7 of which are panoramic, which reproduce as much as possible the marine ecosystems of the area. You will admire species such as groupers, moray eels, sharks, seahorses, octopuses, ocelots, lobsters and many others. In addition, there is an exhibition of shells and of underwater photography.

Spanish fortress of Porto Santo Stefano

Built at the beginning of the 17th century to defend the village from pirates, the fort is now a renovated building transformed into a museum. It currently houses two permanent exhibitions that will become the future Museum of the Sea: the "Museum of the Ax Masters" and "Submerged Memories". This latest one retraces the stages of underwater archaeological research and houses artefacts mostly from the Roman era, recovered in the waters of the Tuscan Archipelago. Instead, the "Masters of Ax" exhibition houses the testimonies of the art of naval carpentry.

Archaeological Area and National Archaeological Museum of Cosa - Orbetello

The ancient Roman city of Cosa rises in a strategic position in Ansedonia. The ruins recovered from private homes, as well as from the port area and the necropolis are important pieces to be seen.

Aquarium of the Orbetello Lagoon

This museum is located in the charming village of Talamone. The exhibition is dedicated to the fauna and flora of the Orbetello Lagoon. The museum offers a complete overview of life and activities in the lagoon through the display of artifacts, photos and videos.

Permanent exhibition in Orbetello

In the Caserma Umberto I in Orbetello there are the ruins of the large terracotta pediment which decorated the Etruscan temple located on the Poggio del Talamonaccio in the  2nd century. The terracotta high-relief depicts the myth of the "Seven in Thebes", which tells of the fratricidal war between Eteocles and Polinice.

Archaeological Museum of Orbetello

The exhibition focuses on the important archaeological evidence discovered in the area of Orbetello (kits from the Etruscan necropolis located on the isthmus) and Talamone (grave goods, votive cabinets and life-size agricultural tools and tools).
