Summer 2022 on Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta: events not to be missed!

The first summer season without Covid-related restrictions. There are many events to attend and leisure opportunities in the Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta area. Here are some tips.

The summer season is around the corner and it comes with great expectations. After years of restrictions and uncertainties due to the pandemic, summer 2022 on Lake Maggiore is back with events of all kinds, finally in-person. Concerts, events, places to see, trips and excursions. You won’t be out of recreation opportunities . Let's see some of the best things to do during the warmer season on Lake Maggiore.

Menta & Rosmarino

Among the Lake Maggiore events not to be missed, you can explore the tenth edition of the Menta e Rosmarino festival. It will take place on  Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 June  at Villa Nigra in Miasino (NO), a vibrant event dedicated to plants, flowers and culture. It is the ideal festival for those with a green thumb and art lovers because it will also be possible to attend the exhibition “Disegno e paesaggio” (drawing and landscape) with artworks by artists and illustrators who tell the story of the Novara area. The event is open and free.

Dreamy gardens to visit

In addition to Menta and Rosmarino, there are several opportunities to visit Lake Maggiore for those who love greenery. It is difficult to mention all the beautiful gardens in the area, but for sure you cannot miss the view of the Borromean Islands with the typical Italian gardens and the botanical park of Isola Madre, or the Pallavicino Park in Stresa. Not to mention Villa Taranto in Verbania.

Music at high altitude and more

One of the most interesting summer events in the area of Lake Maggiore is Musica in Quota, a festival of free concerts that take place on top of the Verbano mountains. The program takes place this year from 19 June to 11 September in unique scenarios between 800 and 2,500 meters above sea level. From Pian d’Arla to the Piancavallone Refuge, from Alpe Lut to Monte Camoscio, it will be possible to listen to choirs and music of different genres. The concert is accompanied by an excursion (not guided) to reach the performance venue. In Verbano as well, you can attend the Cross Festival, a multidisciplinary event that is all about sustainability. It takes place until 3 July in the areas of Verbania, Ameno and Orta San Giulio with a full program to be discovered.

Stresa Festival

This year one of the symbolic events of Lake Maggiore is finally back, the Stresa Festival 61st edition. Directed by Maestro Gianandrea Noseda, there are concerts scheduled in all the most evocative locations of Lake Maggiore: from Stresa, of course, to the Borromean Islands, to the Rocca di Angera, and even in the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso. You can enjoy classical and jazz music with this year’s performing artists Patti Smith, Fabrizio Bosso, Andrea Lucchesini and Stephen Braun.

Cycling Excursions

Among the Lake Maggiore excursions there are many places to see on two wheels, so you can admire unique views without filters. A comfortable loop cycle path connects Stresa and Arona. From here you can enter the Parco dei Lagoni di Mercurago, another place worth seeing while pedaling. For the more daring ones, the advice is to take the climb to Mottarone, known as the "Mountain of the two lakes" because it straddles Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta border.

The Cadorna line and other excursions

For history lovers, the heights of Lake Maggiore hold destinations of great historical value. Such as the so-called Cadorna Line (Linea Cadorna in Italian), a system of fortifications dating back to the First World War, built by the Italian army precisely to prevent access to the Ossola Valley and Lake Maggiore from the north. Today these places are home to the defensive constructions remains, which are accessible to hikers of all ages.

A boat ride

When it comes to things to do on Lake Maggiore, it’s difficult not to think of a boat trip to admire the beauties that are found in the area. The Borromean Islands are once again the most popular destination, but there’s more to see. Another trip not to be missed is the one to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso. Once upon a time, access to this hermitage was only by water. Today it is also possible to enter it from above by elevator but reaching it from the lake keeps all the charm from the past.

Let's go to the beach

Beach tourism is really developed both at Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta during the summer season. The shores of these lakes are in fact studded with nice, accessible beaches, with establishments where you can enjoy every comfort. A unique and fun way to fully immerse yourself in this resourceful area.
