Fantasy, technology and gaming: Venice knows how to inspire

Palaces and bacari arrive among the Lego Ideas while Sony chooses Piazza San Marco to launch the new PlayStation

Between 18 and 19 November Piazza San Marco was filled with lights for a unique show created with the 'floor projection' technique. The heart of the city and its architecture are colored like a drawing canvas, but, in this case, like a screen of about 2400 square meters, thanks to the spectacular installation commissioned by Sony that has included Piazza San Marco among the 25 selected locations in the world  for the launch of the new PlayStation 5.

A tribute to the city that most of all knows how to make people dream and excite, which can reconcile art with adventure, as demonstrated by the many action movie scenes shot between the canals. James Bond, Indiana Jones and recently Ethan Hunt chased each other through the calli that today have become the scene of this worldwide show shared with South Korea, Canada, Mexico, New York, New Zealand and Japan.

Fantasy and beauty as only Venice can inspire, however, have also been able to conquer the public of Lego enthusiasts. The city, in fact, with its buildings, its most representative characters and its traditions, is also the protagonist among the Lego Ideas, that is projects for new sets, proposed by creatives and designers, which will then be voted directly by the public and could enter in production once the ten thousand preferences have been reached. This year there are even two projects dedicated to our beautiful city: Little Venice by Bricky_Brick, which has already received ten thousand preferences, and Little Bàcaro in Venice by AstroFabius, still in progress.

The first is the representation of a typical Venetian foreshortening with the bridges, the water gates of the buildings and the inevitable gondolier alongside other symbolic characters such as glass blowers, musicians and the Harlequin mask.

What is striking, however, is the precision in the details such as the briccole, used to indicate the waterways, or the classic mullioned windows inserted in the facades of the buildings. Little Bàcaro, on the other hand, has smaller dimensions ("only" 628 pieces) and the setting of a metropolitan and festive Venice with the typical crowded place, the counter facing directly on the canal, boys and girls ready to fill the glasses of wine and a customer looking out from his boat ready for his shot in take away version.

A Venice with an underground atmosphere capable of mixing the lagoon and Manhattan.

This, however, is not the first time that the city of the Doges meets the Legos: in fact, the bell tower and basilica of San Marco, with the Rialto bridge, had already gone to compose a skyline of the Architecture line, also accompanied by interesting insights on the architecture and history of the buildings represented.

Whether you are readers of comics and nineteenth-century literature scholars, fans of the latest generation of video games or lovers of action films, for everyone Venice with its streets, canals and squares is an inexhaustible source of dreams, testimonies and new ideas.
