Venice in summer, why not? La Serenissima is always worth a visit, and even in the summer it offers many points of interest, in addition to its perturbing beauty, which makes it the most romantic city in the world. During the hottest months of the year, however, Venice enjoys the shelter of its most intimate calli, and in any case the absence of traffic, an impactful element when temperatures soar. Venice's fervid cultural life also offers events every day, often with international appeal. What events in Venice are not to be missed in this summer of 2022? Here they are!
From 22 July to 31 July the Biennale Danza returns. The sixteenth edition, directed by choreographer and director Wayne McGregor, is entitled "Boundary-Less" and offers numerous daily appointments with international soloists and companies, together with European and Italian newcomers, including world dance leaders and new voices. The event is also an opportunity to experience the spaces and architecture of the Arsenale, normally closed to the public.
Theatre lovers, on the other hand, cannot miss the tenth edition of the Venice Open Stage - Rising Theatre Festival, running until 30 July in Campazzo San Sebastiano. There are 13 appointments on the programme, created by actors and theatre companies not only from Italy, with the idea of bringing new cultural life to the city of Venice.
If the heat is too much, there is nothing better than holing up in a nice museum for a couple of hours of art. Like those provided by the exhibition 'Surrealism and Magic. Enchanted Modernity", on until 26 September at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. At the centre of the exhibition is the Surrealists' interest in magic and the occult, with works ranging from Giorgio de Chirico's metaphysical painting to works by Max Ernst, Victor Brauner, Leonora Carrington, Kurt Seligmann and Remedios Varo.
Until 10 September, every Thursday evening women's jazz takes centre stage on the terrace of the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal for 'Women for Freedom in Jazz'. 10 female jazz voices are involved, for an event that also has an important charitable purpose, raising funds for the Women for Freedom Association.
This is the most famous event, the one that carries the name of Venice throughout the world and is staged at the end of August. We are of course talking about the Venice International Film Festival, now in its 79th edition, which will take place on the Venice Lido from 31 August to 10 September 2022. Who will be the world's leading stars on the red carpet? What is certain is that American actress and Oscar winner Julianne Moore will preside over the International Jury that will award the Golden Lion for Best Film and the other official prizes.
This is one of the most heartfelt events for all Venetians, and not only. The Regata Storica, held every year on the first Sunday in September, brings thousands of enthusiasts and tourists to the banks of the Grand Canal. Dozens and dozens of 16th-century boats, multicoloured and with gondoliers in costume, transport the Doge, the Doge's wife, Caterina Cornaro, and all the highest dignitaries of the Venetian Magistracy, recalling the ceremony dedicated to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, who renounced her throne in favour of Venice, in 1489. The Historical Regatta will take place this year on Sunday 4 September. A true celebration in Venice!
